I mentioned on Patreon (and by extension Subscribestar) in last Friday's post that Redemption Harem's story progression is going to be less linear, and that you'll notice that in v0.2. I don't have much else to talk about this week, so let's talk about that.
Without getting into spoilers, the story of v0.1 is, as you'd expect out of the earliest parts of a game, an introduction to the world and characters. The story of v0.2 expands on that, telling you what's been going on in your absence through the people you meet and the quests available to you. v0.3 will complete this little mini-arc and send you back to whence you came to do something about it, which will involve you buying a horse so you don't have to walk across the island of Reinheim on foot (again).
In order to get to that "leave to do something about it" step, I have to find ways to feed you bits and pieces of the story I want to tell without just sitting you down and expositing at you. As effective as exposition dumps can be, they're also kinda boring and become more so as they get longer, so I try to avoid them. Instead, I prefer to give you bits and pieces as you go through the story.
The trouble with the way I want that to happen in Redemption Harem is that you should be able to get enough bits and pieces from the bare minimum to at least have a solid guess at what's happening. As much as I make games for people like me, and I tend to complete every quest under the sun before I move on and will backtrack the moment I have a new ability if I can't get to the side path without it, game design is a lot more complex than that and if I expect you to be that type of person, you're just going to end up missing things.
So, of the five new quests coming in v0.2, three of them tell slightly different versions of the same story. Which feels like it might be the same general problem of being kinda boring, but each quest will play out a little differently and from slightly different perspectives. If I do it right, you'll get a portion of the picture with each quest, but rather than fitting together like a jigsaw puzzle, those pieces will overlap a bit. That way, even if you're like me and want to be a completionist, you'll end up with a more complete picture rather than just being bored, even if you figure it out early on.
Kinda like I told you at the top of this post that I didn't have much to say about the new content for v0.2 and I was hopefully entertaining enough to get you to keep reading until you wound up at this way-too-long sentence here despite "five new quests" being the only new information about v0.2 the post really contains.
Though I do have a smidge of extra info for you whether you actually read the whole thing or just skipped to the end - 3 of those 5 quests are already done, so with any luck, the last two will be done for a v0.2 test build on Friday and v0.2 will (finally!) release the following week.
